AT&T Ohio Gives $50,000 Grant to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges to Further Bridges, a College Access Program for Underserved Populations

Akron, OH, September 20, 2010 — AT&T today announced a $50,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation to The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC). This grant will provide continuing support for OFIC’s Bridges program in the northeast Ohio area.  The Bridges Program creates a pathway for urban and economically disadvantaged students to gain access to higher education by providing information for both students and their families regarding the importance of a college education, the financial and educational preparation required, and the higher education processes involved.

The contribution was announced at the Youth Excellence Performing Arts Workshop (YEPAW) parent/student orientation meeting today.  YEPAW hosts a Bridges component as part of their ongoing YEPAW 365 after school program.  YEPAW is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization with a mission to encourage youth, through the arts, to pursue lifestyles of excellence.

“This grant will increase the number of minority students who attend college in Ohio, help keep them in school, and provide forums to address diversity issues,” said State Representative Brian Williams.

OFIC President Gordon Brollier said that this grant is a continuation of AT&T’s long involvement with the 34 independent colleges that make up OFIC’s membership.

“For more than five decades AT&T has partnered with OFIC, supporting our mission and the students enrolled in our member colleges and universities,” Brollier stated.   “AT&T recognizes that encouraging Ohio’s students to stay in school, attend college and obtain a degree is beneficial not only for the individual students but also AT&T as a company and for the community from the local to the global level.   Today’s high school and college student could be the productive AT&T employee tomorrow as well as an innovative and engaged business and community leader”.

OFIC is the primary corporate and foundation solicitation organization for 34 independent Ohio colleges and universities and operates one of the largest, most comprehensive and diverse scholarship programs in the state.  OFIC member colleges collectively enroll 99,000 students and award one-third of all bachelor’s degrees in the state. For 60 years OFIC has worked to highlight the leadership, value and excellence of independent higher education and has provided unrestricted operating funds and scholarship commitments through funds raised in annual solicitations of businesses and foundations, thereby assuring continuation of excellence in private higher education. OFIC is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of Ohio’s corporate leaders, as well as presidents of the 34 member colleges.

The member colleges are:  Ashland University, Baldwin-Wallace College, Bluffton University, Capital University, Cedarville University, University of Dayton, Defiance College, Denison University, The University of Findlay, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Franklin University, Heidelberg University, Hiram College, John Carroll University, Kenyon College, Lake Erie College, Lourdes College, Malone University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Muskingum University, Notre Dame College, Oberlin College, Ohio Dominican University, Ohio Northern University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Otterbein University, Urbana University, Ursuline College, Walsh University, Wilmington College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster.
