$11,000 MCGRAW-HILL GIFT TO THE OHIO FOUNDATION OF INDEPENDENT COLLEGES SUPPORTS CENTRAL OHIO SCHOLARS
With a gift of $11,000 to The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) The McGraw-Hill Companies has established a scholarship through OFIC’s Ohio Scholars Program. These funds will provide support for five students from the central Ohio area who are enrolled at an OFIC member college or Central State University and majoring in Education, English, Math, Science or Marketing in the 2009-2010 academic year. McGraw Hill’s first scholars are: Betty Cheney, Columbus; Dennison Cordell, Jr., Columbus; Angelica Gutierrez, Grove City; Michael Shirzadian, Westerville; and Antonio Williams, Galloway.
“We are proud to partner with OFIC to provide academic scholarships to central Ohio students,” said Bill Oldsey, Executive Vice President of McGraw-Hill Education. “Providing students with a college education is absolutely critical if we want our citizens to succeed in a global, knowledge-based economy. And since so many of our employees live and work in central Ohio, we’re particularly pleased to offer these scholarships to students who are attending college in this region.”
One of OFIC’s newest partners, McGraw-Hill joins 650 other businesses and foundations in providing Ohio’s students with access to independent higher education. McGraw-Hill Education, a lifelong learning partner to students and teachers of all kinds, everywhere, addresses every aspect of the education market from pre-K through professional learning. Using traditional materials, online learning and multimedia tools, McGraw-Hill Education empowers teachers, professionals and students of all ages.
Through its Ohio Scholars Program, one of the largest scholarship programs in the state, OFIC oversees selection of scholars according to criteria set by scholarship donors and manages details of the scholarship administration process, including oversight of the scholars’ progress and continuing academic and financial eligibility. Students are nominated for scholarships by their college and/or university. Historically, more than 90% of OFIC scholarship recipients graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
OFIC is the primary corporate and foundation solicitation organization for 34 independent Ohio colleges and universities and operates one of the largest, most comprehensive and diverse scholarship management services in the state. OFIC member colleges collectively enroll 98,000 students and award one-third of all bachelor’s degrees in the state. For 60 years OFIC has worked to highlight the leadership, value and excellence of independent higher education and has provided unrestricted operating funds and scholarship commitments through funds raised in annual solicitations of businesses and foundations, thereby assuring continuation of excellence in private higher education. OFIC is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of Ohio’s corporate leaders, as well as presidents of the 34 member colleges.
The member colleges are: Ashland University, Baldwin-Wallace College, Bluffton University, Capital University, Cedarville University, University of Dayton, Defiance College, Denison University, The University of Findlay, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Franklin University, Heidelberg University, Hiram College, John Carroll University, Kenyon College, Lake Erie College, Lourdes College, Malone University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Muskingum University, Notre Dame College, Oberlin College, Ohio Dominican University, Ohio Northern University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Otterbein College, Urbana University, Ursuline College, Walsh University, Wilmington College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster.
